Culturescapes Greece 2017 opened its gates on October 5th in the city of Basel, Switzerland. CULTURESCAPES is an annual autumn Swiss festival organised by the eponymous non-profit foundation promoting cultural exchange between Switzerland and other countries. It has been running since 2003, each year featuring a different country or region, and this year it focuses on Greece.

Culturescapes Greece 2017, co-patroned by the Greek Ministry of Culture and sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, showcases contemporary Greek intellectual and creative achievement with art exhibitions, cinema screenings, music, theatre and dance, literary events, lectures and seminars, as well as a tribute to Greek gastronomy.

There are upcoming events held in various venues in twelve cities until December 3rd, including amongst others screenings of films by some of Greece’s most prominent directors, such as Yorgos Lanthimos and Panos Koutras, performances by the widely acclaimed Blitz Theatre Group, lectures on literature, politics and philosophy, and more.

Web3 BlitzFeatured also is the “The Decline of Heroes” exhibition of paintings, photographs, murals, installations and video art by contemporary artists like Giorgos Zamboulakis and Adonis Volanakis, which runs until 21 January 2018 at the Antikenmuseum Basel. Organised within the framework of the museum’s permanent collection “The Greeks and Their World: Identity and Ideals”, it is curated by Kateryna Botanova of the Culturescapes Foundation.

The foundation has also published Culturescapes Greece – Archaeology of the Future, a bilingual illustrated edition (in English and German) with input from Greek artists, authors, researchers, scientists and politicians reflecting on Greek culture, history and national identity. The publication forms part of a series influenced by Culturescapes festivals in recent years.
