Repatriation of three Greek antiquities

Three Greek antiquities that had been removed from Greece at an unknown time were repatriated from Atlanta, USA. These are as follows:

1. Part of a marble tombstone. This is a work of a provincial workshop, probably of Thessalian origin, and dates to the beginning of the 4th century BC.

2. Part of an Attic funerary temple made of Pentelic marble with a relief, dating from around 330-320 BC.

3. Bronze statuette of a naked young man, probably an athlete, which could be dated to the end of the 2nd century BC.

The three ancient objects were delivered to the Consulate of Greece in Atlanta in order to be returned to Greece. This repatriation is indicative of the trend that has been developing worldwide in recent years, as a result of awareness-raising and public information campaigns on the need to preserve cultural heritage and return antiquities to the countries where they belong.

Greek researcher Marianna Rapsomaniki leads a team that created an artificial intelligence model for the pathological analysis of cancer

An advanced artificial intelligence model capable of contributing to the pathological analysis and diagnosis of cancer has been created by a team of researchers, led by Greek researcher Marianna Rapsomaniki, from the Biomedical Data Science Center of the University of Lausanne and the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland. In order to overcome the common obstacle of lack of sufficient histological data to diagnose cancer in a patient, the research team created the artificial intelligence model called “VirtualMultiplexer”, which generates images of biopsies and specifically of tissue analysis through tissue staining, a technique used to diagnose cancer in the laboratory. Thus, using Generative AI and through its training on numerous images of tissues analysed in the laboratory by applying dyes, the model generates detailed images of a cancer tissue and the information it carries at the molecular level, an element very important for the precise identification of the disease.

FIRST Global Challenge 2024 in Athens

From 26 to 29 September 2024, students from more than 190 countries from around the world will gather in Athens to participate in the international robotics competition “FIRST Global Challenge 2024”. This is an Olympic-style robotics competition held every year in a different country. FIRST Global invites each country to send a team to build and program a racing robot. This year’s competition theme “Feeding the Future” challenges FIRST Global teams to learn, address barriers and recognize opportunities to equitably provide safe, nutritious and environmentally responsible food the world’s population.
