Responding to the needs of today’s theatre goers and making the most of contemporary technology, the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) and WE company introduce an innovative initiative in the Greek theatre landscape by launching the interactive e-book “Ancient Greek Drama at the National Theatre of Northern Greece (1961-2016)” so as to offer a live virtual tour of NTNG’s rich archive.
The e-book includes audiovisual material and information on the NTNG performances that were staged at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, open-air theatres and other venues all over Greece. Specifically, it consists of 464 digital pages, 289 pictures, 31videos and 34 audio clips covering 55 years of theatre history, 45 ancient Greek drama productions and 12 programmes of the most emblematic NTNG performances.
The e-book, which is available both in Greek and in English, can be downloaded for free on computers, tablets and mobile phones worldwide. Thus, it constitutes a search tool, with its content accessible while offline, as it can redirect its online readers to the full content of NTNG’s Digital Archive.
The National Theatre of Northern Greece is currently the country’s largest theatrical organization. With four winter venues, two open-air theatres, and tours in various cities of Greece and abroad, it is an active cultural hub since 1961 that presents an annual programme combining in-house productions and co-productions with other theatrical organizations from Greece and abroad. Its activity expands to the cultural domains of education, literature and fine arts, it holds exhibitions, conferences, international festivals, educational theatre programmes and more. The NTNG is overseen and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Since 1996, it is a member of the Union of Theatres of Europe, as well as a member of the International Theatre Institute.
As for the innovative company “WE”, it was the vision of Art Director and photographer George Chrisochoidis, who has now collaborated with a constantly growing group of artists aiming to promote Greece as one of the top global cultural destinations. The team’s goal is to produce quality print and multimedia material that will not only introduce viewers to Greek culture but to also initiate them into a total experience, activating all the senses.
