Greece fully supports the directives issued by UNESCO to combat the illicit trading of cultural goods, noted Alternate Minister for Culture Nikos Xydakis yesterday (19.5), addressing the Third Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention in Paris. Xydakis presented Greece’s proposition on the issue called Stop Illicit Trafficking, which urges the 127 countries of the 1970 UNESCO’s convention to form a wider alliance to help authorities prevent cultural goods exiting a country without legal documents.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ feature film The Lobster is competing for the Palme d'Or in the 2015 Cannes Festival (13-24/5/2015). Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C.Reilly and Lea Seydoux, it is set in dystopian future, where single people are forced to mate in a facility, called the Hotel, within 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into the animal of their choice and are released in the woods.

This is not the first time one of Lanthimos’ films competes in Cannes; his film Dogtooth has won the Un Certain Regard prize in 2009.

The annual general assembly of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) took place yesterday. Addressing the event, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that Greece had now entered the final stretch in talks with creditors in order to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement. NATO and the EU should cooperate to limit extremism, fundamentalism and irredentism in the Balkans, Greek National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos stated at the EU Defence Ministers Meeting in Brussels yesterday (18 May).

Kammenos noted that the challenges for Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) are Jihadist terrorism threat in the EU, human trafficking from regions of North Africa and the Middle East and the exploitation of real or imaginary minority issues.

The Special Olympics Flame of Hope for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015 (LA2015) was lit during a formal torch lighting ceremony (May 14). The torch was lit by the sun’s rays at the Sacred Site of Pnyx, opposite the Acropolis. "This Flame of Hope will ignite the cauldron in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games," said Patrick McClenahan, LA2015 President and CEO.
