The Thessaloniki Science Festival is taking place on May 14-17 in the city’s international exhibition centre, prompted by the success of the Athens Science Festival (17 - 22.03).

Thessaloniki together with ten more cities around the world, was chosen by Google for the launch of its "Solve for X" project, a pioneer and ambitious endeavour by Google’s X lab, which aims to tackle global problems through science and technology.

A painting exhibition on the picturesque side of Luxembourg (Malerisches) is being held at the city’s Beim Engel Art Gallery. The works are by the Austria-based artist Makis Warlamis, co-director of the International Design Center in Austria (I.DE.A.) and the Waldviertel Art Museum. The exhibition, which was inaugurated in the presence of the Minister of Culture of Luxembourg, aims to highlight the interaction between modern art and the city’s historic heritage. "To me, it is important that Luxembourg, this beautiful piece of land, is transformed into an art space," says Warlamis.

Professor Oswyn Murray, emeritus Fellow at the University of Oxford is giving a lecture today (11.05) on The Western Traditions of Ancient History at the British School at Athens.

Since the 18th century, the study of Ancient history has focused on the concepts of imperialism and liberty. The lecture focuses on a less known aspect in the study of Ancient History, that of ‘Sacred History’. It explores how in the 19th century, those three strands helped to preserve Ancient History from the nationalism of western ideas of ‘Modern History’.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke on the phone yesterday (May 7) with Russian President Vladimir Putin and confirmed the Greek government's willingness to participate - via a public sector company - in the construction of a pipeline carrying Russian natural gas that would carry natural gas to Europe, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The government has a mandate to find a sustainable solution to the economy within the eurozone, Government Vice-President Yiannis Dragasakis told Guardian daily yesterday (7.05).

"We do not have a mandate to take Greece out of the eurozone, and it’s not an option either for the government or for SYRIZA," he said ahead of a Eurogroup meeting scheduled on May 11, Dragasakis was optimistic about a solution, noting that "talks, so far, have shown there is common ground in changes and political measures and, therefore, I believe a deal is possible and in the interests of everyone.”
