Innovation and Technology took centre stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress, the largest celebration of global mobile technology, which took place in Barcelona last week (22 – 25 February). The Mobile World Congress is considered the most important event worldwide in the mobile industry, hosting all trends showcased by the largest companies of the industry and attracting over 100.000 visitors and 5.000 CEOs from 204 countries and territories. The event was covered by more than 3,600 members of the international press and media.

Some 40 countries and territories from around the world showcased innovative companies and ideas in dedicated Country Pavilions. Greece was present, for the fourth consecutive year, with its dynamic R&D sector exhibiting a collective effort to consolidate its name in international high technology. The Greek national pavilion – organized by the Hellenic Association of Mobile Application (HAMAC), the General Secretariat for Telecommunications and Postal Services and Enterprise Greece, the official agency promoting Greece as an outstanding destination for investment – gave the opportunity to more than 70 Greek technology companies to expand their business in Europe and the world. At a parallel event called 4YFN that was dedicated to Start Ups, Greece was present with the support of the Hellenic Start Ups Association.

Showcasing their innovative methods but also their business proposals in an exhibition area of more than 120,000 sq.m, representatives of the Greek mission were able to present their products and services in a broad area, ranging from applications on mobile devices to super-fast 5G networks, to the Internet of Things, to electronic trading, entertainment and the management of vast amounts of data. The “Greek National Technology Team”, which was supported by the Greek state and private sponsors (Upstream and Viva), championed the work of the whole Greek technology and R&D sector by hosting numerous  companies, educational institutions, research institutes and startups, essentially, the entire ecosystem of digital technology and innovation of the country. Additionally, several other Greek companies were represented outside the stand, adding to the strong presence of the Greek technology sector.

In the three preceding years, the main goal of the Greek representation was to spread the message that Greek innovators can perform in an international environment and inform on how the Greek ecosystem grows. This year’s goal was to ensure the name of Greece as an international player in the high technology and mobile communications sector, as well as to create synergies with even stronger networking. The Greek pavilion invited visitors to see the important role of technology in our daily lives, and that 24/7 there is an application, a solution and a concrete proposal in that regard by a Greek company.

At the official inauguration of the Greek Pavilion, the General Secretary for Media and Communication Dr. Lefteris Kretsos, wished every success to the Greek mission, noting that “the Greek Participation at the Mobile World Congress for the fourth consecutive year is one of the most important events for our country’s extroversion. The road to recovery passes obligatorily through the utilization of new technologies and the broadening of opportunities for the decent employment of young scientists in the area of cutting edge technology”.
