🏛The Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών - University of Athens has been ranked among the top 200 in the world for 2025, according to the "Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (NTU Rankings)".

With this distinction, the University of Athens becomes the first Greek University to break into the top 200 (2025) joining the world’s leading institutions in one of seven internationally recognized and widely respected global benchmarking systems that apply a comprehensive, multi-criteria framework.

8 more Greek universities figured in the rankings; tese were, by order of rank: the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Harokopio University of Athens, the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Ioannina, the University of Thessaly, the University of Patras, and the Technical University of Crete.

In addition to the overall rating, NTU provides rankings by 6 knowledge fields and 27 subject areas. Here too the University of Athens distinguished itself by making its way into the top Universities in 5 out of 6 fields. Particular mention should be made to the field of Medicine, in which the University of Athens ranks 102nd worldwide.

Journalists face threats worldwide; in 2013, the UN, under the leadership of Greece, adopted the landmark General Assembly resolution “The Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity”; since then, Greece has tabled and championed subsequent biennial resolutions at the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, ensuring that the issue remains high on the international agenda.
More recently, Greece has taken a leading role in advancing protection for journalists reporting on climate change and environmental issues. The resolution of November 11, 2025, focuses on the heightened risks faced by journalists covering environmental destruction and climate policy.

The Ministry of Culture Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού has announced the inscription of three new elements in Greece’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, in accordance with the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO, 2003).

In her statement, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said that these entries showcase Greece’s cultural richness, strengthening collective memory and historical continuity, connecting the past with the present, while shaping the future. The three elements inscribed in Greece’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage are:

Spathouraki and Spatholado: Ethnobotanical Knowledge and Practices in Doxato, Drama

Spathochorto (St John's wort) grows wild in many regions of Greece and is an important component of folk medicinal tradition. In the plain of Doxato, the plant is collected for the preparation of two traditional remedies: spathouraki (St John's tincture) and spatholado (St John's oil).

“Vale” – Women’s Dance in Aspropyrgos, Attica

The dance of “Vale” is a tradition involving the women of Aspropyrgos in Attica, on Cheesefare Sunday. Young women form a large circle to dance and sing in the Arvanite tradition, without music. Then they dance traditional Greek dances to live music and, finally, the custom concludes with local men dancing.

The Great Fire Custom on Holy Thursday in Agia Theodora, Arta

On the morning of Holy Thursday, the parishioners of Agia Theodora flock to the central square to build a large bonfire, for which they have been gathering wood for a month. During the Service of the Passion, with the mournful tolling of the bell, they light the fire, which symbolizes the bonfires outside the praetorium of Pontius Pilate, creating an impressive sight.
