Six medals for Greek students at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad

Greek students won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Bath, UK, from July 11 to 22, 2024, with 108 countries taking part. As the Hellenic Mathematical Society points out in a Press release, the strong performance of Greek students in international competitions continued this year, as all participating students were selected in a tough and demanding two-day competition. More specifically, the students who took part in the Olympiad were selected, as every year, through the Panhellenic Mathematics Competition organized by the Hellenic Mathematical Society since 1934, with the participation of 12,000 students from all over Greece. Heartiest congratulations!

Alonissos Underwater Museum: the Parthenon of shipwrecks

Alonissos Underwater Museum, Greece’s first underwater museum, is home to one of the largest shipwrecks of the classical era, dating from 425 to 420 BC. The wreck was discovered in 1985 by Dimitris Mavrikis at a depth of 25 meters off the island of Peristera. The ship’s unique size makes it one of the largest merchant vessels of its time, measuring 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, and carrying around 3,000 amphorae filled with celebrated wines. The wreck is of exceptional archaeological importance due to the large number of intact amphorae that have survived to the present day, and is often described as “the Parthenon of shipwrecks”.
