The cultural heritage of Greece is protected by strong national and international laws, but this diverse heritage remains at risk of being stolen, looted, or illegally traded. Indeed, the Greek cultural heritage has suffered great losses over the years, compared to its special significance.

The 'Red List of Greek Cultural Objects at Risk', recently published by the International Council of Museums in cooperation with ICOM Greece and a dedicated team of specialists in Greece, with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, is an important instrument in the fight against the illicit traffic of cultural heritage by identifying the type of objects that are most at risk.

A statue of Maria Callas, created by sculptor Nikos Floros, has been adorning the main building of UNESCO in Paris since recently.

Addressing the unveiling ceremony, which took place at the initiative of the Greek Delegation to UNESCO and in collaboration with the Italian Delegation, the Greek Permanent Representative, George Koumoutsakos emphasised that Maria Callas was a universal Greek woman.

On his part, sculptor Nikos Floros explained that he wanted his sculpture to be made of bronze because bronze is "a strong and eternal material, like the talent and legacy of Callas."
