Syros is one of the most famous islands of the Cyclades known and admired for its diverse landscape and beaches, its rich commercial history, its religious heritage (the coexistence of the Christian Orthodox and Catholic doctrines enriching its spiritual identity) but also its endless cultural events full of music, theatrical performances and artistic events that run throughout the summer at the Municipality of Ermoupolis.
In this magnificent location, a celebration of gastronomy called “Syros GrEATings” is taking place from the 16th till the 18th of September, where flavours from the west meet the east and where the “cucina povera” born in the humble households of the countryside and the tavernas of Ano Syra seal with their unique signature the sophisticated and complex flavours of the recipes created in the rich kitchens of the aristocratic mansions of Ermoupolis, the capital of city and region of Cyclades.
The Festival invites visitors to embark on a historic journey of Syros through its gastronomic heritage, enriched by the people who inhabited the island over centuries that come from different places and cultures, each bringing along their particular customs, traditions, tastes, practices and techniques in gastronomy! During the three days of the Festival, 17 restaurants that will join the event through the Aegean Cuisine network, will be offering special menus enriched with dishes inspired by the gastronomic heritage of Syros, bringing the unique tastes and flavours of the island closer to all foodies. A group of journalists specialized in food and wine will participate as honourary ambassadors, while various parallel events are scheduled, i.e. the photographic exhibition “Syros fEAsT for the eyes” displayed at the entrance of the impressive Town Hall building, illustrating the gastronomic heritage of the island. Also, an exhibition presenting the history of the famous “Syros Loukoumi” will be running throughout the Festival at the Industrial Museum, another place worth visiting, showcasing the island’s industrial history. Live cooking sessions, local products exhibits, visits to local producers, a presentation of the “Syros Greek Breakfast” and many more events are included in this three day programme, designed to satisfy the most demanding palates!
