The time of celebration for bibliophiles has arrived. The 46th Book Festival will take place from 1 to 17 September, at the Zappeion gardens, organized by the Association of Book Publishers in collaboration with the Greek National Committee of UNICEF, National Broadcaster/ ERT, the National Theatre of Greece, the National Theatre of Northern Greece and Karolos Koun Greek Art Theatre, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Athens and the Hellenic Foundation of Culture.
The main tribute of this year’s event is “Book-Theatre-Cinema”. Theatre and cinema lovers will have the opportunity to explore and learn about new titles from both arts. In the context of the tribute to cinema and theatre, a rich programme of events has been organized by the State Theatre of Northern Greece (September 2, at 20.30), Karolos Koun Art Theatre (September 9, at 20.30), the National Theatre (September 10, at 20.30) as well as an event on “Book, Cinema and Cinema Education” by the Association of Book Publishers (September 8, at 20.30). Greek Public Broadcaster ERT is also organising an event about its contribution to books, cinema and theatre. In the above context, a special event will also take place focusing on the adaptations of the works of one of Greece’s great writers, Nikos Kazantzakis for the theatre, television and cinema. Moreover, there will be an event on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution titled “October Revolution, 100 Years: Constant Inspiration for Writers and Film Makers”.
Poet George Christou will be honoured at the Festival in an event titled “The poet in times of poverty”. As every year, the Book Festival Programme features a great number of book presentations, book signing, storytelling and other activities for children and teenagers, such as a presentation on the risks of the Internet on September 1st (at 19.30).
The Festival will be open between 18:00 – 22:30 from Monday to Thursday, 18:00 – 23:00 on Friday and Saturday, while on Sundays it will be open between 10:30 – 15:00 and 18:00-22:30.
The Opening Ceremony of the Festival by the President of Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos will be held on Monday, September 4th at 20.00
This year’s poster of the Book Festival celebrates the work of the surrealist Greek painter Theodoros Pantaleon.
