Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated the restoration and enhancement projects of the Mystras fortress city and the museum exhibitions at the Palace of the Despots, in the presence of Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.

The projects include the upgrading of visitor routes to ensure maximum accessibility for people with disabilities, the protection of the monument against wildfire risks through the installation of a modern water supply and firefighting system, and the comprehensive preservation of important churches through systematic conservation work on their structural elements and painted decoration. These initiatives mark the completion of a major, long-term investment in the cultural heritage of Laconia.

In her speech, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasized: “Today is a particularly important day for Laconia and the Peloponnese, because this is not merely the inauguration of another restoration project. A place of national historical memory and identity is being returned once again to society — a cultural asset of universal value and a timeless center of civilization.”

She added that “the project we deliver today concerns the reintegration of a leading site of Byzantine heritage into the contemporary cultural and tourism map of Greece and Europe. It concerns the fully upgraded ability of Greek and foreign visitors to experience history firsthand and to recognize the enduring significance of Greek culture and the historical continuity of Hellenism.”
